Beauty and the Beast - 6 November 1999

Beauty and the Beast is an afternoon's easy entertainment, a little too pantomimish for my liking, but visually spectacular, good music, great choreography and performances

Annalene Beechey is a delightful Belle, with charming character and a crystal clear voice. She is my favourite Cosette in Les Miz and proved herself here as a worthy leading lady. Earl Carpenter was excellent as the Beast, creating a portrayal just right, not too over the top and sensitive and well sung. He and Annalene worked well together.

Alex Bourne was the suitable 'beefcake' material as Gaston and Mark Cavan, Gemma Craven and Barrie James provided admirable support as the household implements.

The transformation scene is very clever even when you know how they do it !!!
